I was on a zoom call last week with two of my treasured “soul sister” friends. Among the giggles, questions, and loving comments we discovered a trend. Each of us were having up close experiences with…creatures. Whether it had fur, wings or was long legged and jumpy, we had all encountered signs from nature in the form of these nonhuman souls.
We discussed the spiritual meaning of each of the specific “visitors” and discovered how perfect each message was for the recipient. Coincidence? Not a chance.
One of my friends mentioned butterflies in her house. Many resources describe the butterfly as bringing a message of personal transformation, renewal, rebirth, and even elevation from earthly focus to a more spiritual one. According to Ted Andrews, author of “Animal Speak:”
“An important message carried by the spirit of the butterfly is about the ability to go through important changes with grace and lightness.”
I thought about how vital this message was for me, right now in my life and how I pray for “…the ability to go through important changes with grace and lightness.” I wanted to see a butterfly. Did I need it to validate my spiritual progress?
No, but it would be fun!
The day after my call, my husband and I headed up to Shenandoah National Park for a day in the mountains. It was a rare late July for us here in Virginia. After a few sweltering weeks, the day’s temperature hoovered around 78 with no humidity. Perfection. We walked forest trails, took photos on the rocks, enjoyed the fresh air, and saw butterflies. Everywhere!
Yes, it’s summer here and I would expect to see butterflies. And I’ve never seen the number of butterflies, the variety of species or seen them in as many unusual locations as I did this day. Coincidence? Not a chance.
Now when I see a butterfly dancing around a beautiful flower or fluttering past my window, I’ll be reminded of her vital message: “you have the ability to go through important changes with grace and lightness.”
I feel lighter already.
